How Are We Different?
There are two standard models for counseling practices out there that pretty much everyone falls into.
GROUP PRACTICES
First is the ‘group practice’ model where a group of independent contractor counselors work together in the same office to share expenses. In this model each counselor practices independent and without training or quality control from the group. Each uses their own approach and results vary greatly. Some of the counselors in the group are good, some are not. This is how most private practices operate.
NETWORKS/PLATFORMS
The second model is similar in that all counselors are independent contractors and there is no training or quality control from the organization. Networks and platforms are connector services that serve as a go between for independent contractors and clients. Examples include Focus on the Families Christian counselor network, BetterHelp, TalkSpace, Faithful Counseling, Regain, Etc.

WE ONLY HIRE THE BEST THERAPISTS
Minimum education requirements for hiring include a Masters in Mental Health and we only hire 2% of applicants. ALL new counselors hired complete a 2-Year, 4,000hour, Post-Graduate Residency including 2,000 hours of theology & neuroscience training and 2,000 hours of supervised direct client care experience with rotations in trauma-informed care, emotion focused couples counseling, and sex therapy.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Our therapists are trained, supervised, and held accountable to high standards by the leadership of the practice. Counseling sessions are recorded and reviewed by supervising therapists for quality assurance and training. Counselors are given direct feedback by their supervisors about their therapy and held accountable for the quality of their work.
INTENSIVE TRAINING
All our counselors are required to engage their own personal growth through individual and group therapy. Clinical Supervisors coach counselors in best practices and develop individualized deliberate practice plans through systematic observation of live session videos.
EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT MODEL
We practice a proprietary model of care, Neuroscience Informed Christian Counseling®, with a 92% success rate (15% higher than the industry average). Utilizing a Quality Assurance process that collects outcome data for every client and engages an intensive Case Review for 100% of clients reporting a less than 5-Star experience
The Birth of MyCounselor
We, Josh & Cassie Spurlock, founded MyCounselor in the fall of 2007. We had a dream to help families fulfill their created potential by providing excellent Christian counseling services. It’s what we knew King Jesus was calling us to.
But how? Anyone who has built an organization knows how much risk, struggle, and work it takes. Studying Biblical languages (3 years of Greek and 2 years of Hebrew) in Bible college and mental health in graduate school equipped Josh for counseling, but not for building a company! Likewise, caring fulltime for the foster kids that lived in our home taught Cassie how to love people through really hard and messy circumstances, but not lead a team of professionals.
Josh had started a few small businesses over the years, including a pressure washing and painting business at age 16, a coffee shop and a moving company in college, and a few others. Still, the sheer scale of the vision God had given overshadowed anything life had prepared us for.
BUT GOD. We trusted God to bring about what He had put in our hearts. He would bring along the right people at the right time and show the way. Our faith was tested many times over the years. Like in 2017 when we felt clearly the direction to pivot the counseling practice to focus on providing faith-based counseling services world-wide online.
At the time the world was still very skeptical of online counseling. Even Josh’s friends thought he was crazy! It felt a lot like Noah building a boat in the desert. Then 2020 and COVID. Overnight the entire mental health field had to figure out online counseling. Josh’s phone began to explode with calls from other counseling practices saying, “Hey friend, you’ve been doing this online thing for a few years now, we have to be online by Monday….where do we start?”
It was crazy! God had positioned our team exactly where He wanted us to be for such a season. Today a team of more than 30 counselors empower more than 1,000 families each month.
MyCounselor continues to innovate as it develops its state-of-the-art and faithful to the Bible model of care, Neuroscience Informed Christian Counseling (NICC). As we continue to grow, our 2-year post-graduate residency is becoming a gold standard for professional development in the field of faith-based mental health.
